The Nature of STEM and the 4th Industrial Revolution

The Nature of STEM and the 4th Industrial Revolution

Technology and engineering seek different ends of scientific investigation.

What is Scientific Investigation?

An understanding of natural processes wherein a scientific account is based on data gathering and analysis and other evidence obtained through direct observations or experiments. Involves reflect inferences that are broadly shared and communicated and can be accompanied by a model that offers a naturalistic explanation expressed in conceptual, mathematical, and/or mechanical terms.

The aim of Technology/Engineering: To design and manufacture useful devices or materials, defined as technologies, whose purpose is to increase our efficacy in the world and our enjoyment of it.

Examples of Technology:

  • Can openers
  • Microwave ovens
  • Microchips
  • Safety glass
  • Zippers
  • Much of Disney World
  • The industrial production of cars
  • Processed foods
  • And currently the much-needed face masks and ventilators

Each of these emerges from the scientific knowledge, imagination, persistence, talent, and ingenuity of practitioners of technology/engineering. Each technology represents a designed solution that applies scientific principles, usually created in response to a specific practical problem. As with science, direct engagement with the problem is central to defining and solving it.

Out of years of knowledge development & applications, it has come to light that the greater part of the interlink between and across each subject or knowledge area will soon be orchestrated, managed, monitored and sustained through coding and programming. Hence today, we speak of a phenomenon called 4IR - the 4th Industrial Revolution.
