Making Suet Balls for Birds

Making Suet Balls for Birds

Use these steps to create suet balls for the birds around your home. Get the whole family involved!

Step 1:

  • Melt 4 x 125g packs of Holsum fat (or similar - its is a white hard margarine made of sunflower oil that can be purchased at your local supermarket) in a microwaveable mixing bowl by placing in a microwave at 70% power for 5 minutes.
  • Once liquefied, add 3 x heaped dessert spoons of peanut butter and mix

Step 2:

  • Add 14 cups of bird seed of your choice (wild seed or basic maize meal) and mix

Step 3:

  • Remove about half of the mixture from the mixing bowl and then add about 3 cups of flour to the half remaining and mix together
  • You should end up with a mixture that binds.
  • Tip: If its too dry, add more peanut butter, if its too wet, add more flour.

Step 4:

  • If the mixture is of the correct consistency, then you should be able to compress it into a ball without leaving residue on your hands

Step 5:

  • Weigh out 150g portions of the mixture and compress (with constant turning) in your hands to form a ball – see below.

Step 6:

  • Repeat steps 3-5 with the other half of the mixture.

The above quantities should allow you to make 23-26 x 150g suet balls that will fit into all cylindrical suet ball holders.
