Interactive Science Displays and Static Sparks at Scifest Africa

Interactive Science Displays and Static Sparks at Scifest Africa

A university student approached me just before a demonstration saying, ‘Hey, I’ve seen one of those in my textbook’. He was referring to the van der Graaf generator that was working overtime with thousands of learners, teachers and parents all coming to discover the amazing world of science. I turned the generator on. By now a group of high school kids had gathered around in awe of the power of static electricity to make threads stand up all on their own.

The teacher at the back beckoned lagging students to catch up and witness something they had previously only seen in pictures. Suddenly there was a loud ‘crack’ as the generator discharged to the wand. Everyone took a big step back! With the crowd entertained and intrigued, we began to relate this to local lightning storms, tickles when a jersey is pulled off in winter or the spark felt as a door handle is touched.

Scifest Africa, South Africa's national science festival is held annually in Grahamstown with the aim to promote an appreciation and awareness of science, technology, engineering, mathematics and innovation. Interactivity is a key focus in stand design - so around every corner, there are practical, hands-on science activities to be observed and experienced. The choice of workshops, lectures and stands to visit is almost overwhelming. What a great showcase of what is on offer for science in South Africa! It was so encouraging to see the interest and commitment from all those who attended. We can’t wait for next year!
